Technical notes

The Cxbx-Reloaded build RetroBat installs as its "chihiro" emulator (chihiro.7z sha256 bff3c1c75a1ccaa3019ee628172f8ebca21795d770d46d206090b36043e85c71). Its cxbx.exe, cxbxr-emu.dll and cxbxr-ldr.exe all carry the version string "31ff15b (Dec 21 2023)", the merge of pull request 2440 on the develop branch. RetroBat launches it from emulators\chihiro with /load and the XBE, or the default.xbe of a title directory. ref: emulatorLauncher Generators/Cxbx.Generator.cs:99-110, 122-243

At this revision the Chihiro support sits behind CHIHIRO_WORK, which no project file defines, so the release build has none of it: no JVS base board, no boot.id detection, no media board ROM extraction, and an XBE detected as Chihiro ends the run with "Emulating Chihiro mode does not work yet". The binary holds that message and none of the media board or base board file names the later builds read. Titles run here only as Xbox or debug XBEs. ref: src/core/kernel/init/CxbxKrnl.cpp:573-639, 668-699, 721-731

The kernel is reimplemented and XBE code executes natively, so no flash ROM or MCPX image is read. Every path below is relative to the data directory. RetroBat's settings.ini template sets DataStorageToggle to 1, the folder holding cxbx.exe. EmuDisk and EmuMu are created under it at startup, and the hard disk partitions inside EmuDisk are created and formatted by the emulator. ref: src/common/Settings.cpp:880-915, src/common/FilePaths.cpp:82-109

The media board names Chihiro\fpr21042_m29w160et.bin and Chihiro\SEGABOOT_MBROM0.XBE / SEGABOOT_MBROM1.XBE stay in the file layer, reached on a reboot to firmware when the system is Chihiro or when a title opens the mbrom0: or mbrom1: devices. Neither happens once Chihiro mode is refused, so they are not listed. ref: src/core/kernel/support/EmuFile.cpp:355-357, 555-566, src/core/kernel/exports/EmuKrnlHal.cpp:546-556

3 files: 0 required, 3 optional.

In this collection: 3 in repo and 0 missing.

EEPROM.bin optional in repo built-in fallback

Xbox EEPROM image

  • Opened at startup and mapped read/write, created and filled with defaults when absent. A file that is not 256 bytes ends the run. Section CRCs are recomputed on every load, the hard disk key and game region are taken from it, and the stored checksum is compared with the HMAC of the confounder and hard disk key keyed with the EEPROM key of keys.bin. A mismatch only logs a warning and sets the LED sequence.

keys.bin optional in repo

Xbox EEPROM and certificate keys

  • Two 16 byte keys, the EEPROM key then the certificate key, as written by dump-xbox. Any other length is refused with a warning, and an absent file only costs reading save data from a real console.

xboxdash.xbe optional in repo

Xbox dashboard executable

  • Launched when a title reboots with an empty launch path and by the Open Dashboard menu entry. When it is missing the console's unrecoverable error screen is shown. Titles run without it.
